Brazil: peasants demonstrate demanding their lands in Messias

We hereby share a resume of a report published by A Nova Democracia (AND).

On Friday, 24th of January, a bit more than 3 months after the eviction that expelled more than 700 peasant families in the municipality of Messias, in Alagoas, peasants organized by the League of Poor Peasants (LCP) held a demonstration demanding lands promised by the City Hall when the eviction was carried out. A local reporter sent by AND was present in the mobilization and carried out interviews to the protesting peasants.

The peasants marched to the city hall. Guards formed a line and blocked the entrance to the institution. A protesting peasant denounce that and stated: “We came here to demand our rights and we didn’t even touch anything or anyone. These guards only prove the fear they have when the people unite”.

The act lasted few more than 1 hour. The city did not send any representative to talk with the peasants, and according to the peasants this showed “the cowardly stance of this city hall”.

“We want our homes!”, shouted peasants during the demonstration. “The latifundium and the old State are Siamese twin institutions. The Usina Utinga Leão and the Messias City Hall have been working together against the poor people of the countryside”, said LCP representative in an interview with AND.
