In Istanbul, on the 7th of July, following the call from the Istanbul Forces of Labor, Peace and Democracy a march took place from the AKM to Dolmabahçe in protest of the NATO Summit held in Ankara, Yeni Demokrasi reports.

The crowd, which included members of Partizan, chanted slogans such as “Imperialists, Collaborators: Don’t Forget the 6th Fleet” and “Imperialism Will Be Defeated, the Resisting Peoples Will Win” throughout the march. Speeches delivered during the event condemned the budgets allocated for the NATO Summit, as well as the police operations and arrests carried out in many provinces.

In a press statement following the march, the Istanbul Forces of Labor, Peace and Democracy issued the following demands:

  • All NATO bases must be closed!
  • Withdraw from NATO immediately!
  • NATO, the world’s largest organization of war and aggression, must be dismantled!
  • The arms race—which paves the way for bloody wars over the division of the world—must be stopped!
  • We must put an end to the massive budgets diverted from the most basic needs of working people—from education to healthcare, from housing to social rights—and channeled into military spending!
  • Opposing NATO and imperialism is not a crime! The hundreds of our socialist, revolutionary, progressive, and democratic comrades arrested in Istanbul and Ankara must be released immediately!

In Eskişehir, Turkey, the Labor and Democracy Platform were set to carry out a demonstration under the slogan “Killer NATO get out of Turkey”, when the police attacked a crowd that had gathered and detained at least 35 people.

In Kadıköy, Turkey, the Anti-NATO and Imperialist War Youth Union marched under slogans against the NATO summit facing repression from the police.
