ABRAPO Achieves Suspension of Eviction in Rondônia and There is Mobilization for Dr. Lenir Correia

The Brazilian Association of People’s Lawyers (ABRAPO) announced that it has successfully suspended an eviction order that threatened approximately 400 rural families in the Tiago Campin dos Santos 1 and 2 camps in Porto Velho, Rondônia. The decision was made on June 1 by the Court of the 2nd Unit of Agrarian Conflicts in Porto Velho.

A Nova Democracia reports on the judicial decision to suspend the coercive eviction order and referred the case to the Regional Commission for Land Solutions. “This is another important victory, the result of years of coordinated technical and political confrontation by ABRAPO against the violence of big landlords in the region,” states the press release.

However, ABRAPO denounced that, despite the victory against eviction, the judicial decision also accepted a petition presented by a third intervenor, lawyer Ivanete dos Santos Damasceno, and excluded ABRAPO from the judicial process registry, thereby denying them access to case information. The entity classified the maneuver as “fraudulent” and stated that this lawyer does not have a power of attorney from the vast majority of rural families.

The Tiago Campin dos Santos area is one of the main areas of struggle in the countryside of Rondônia and has been the target of successive offensives by latifundium and the old State. The families denounced publicly that the lands were grabbed by the big landlords. They have been living and working this land for years under threats of eviction, armed attacks, criminalization, and police operations.

Among these attacks was the arrest of ABRAPO lawyer Lenir Correia, who was considered a political prisoner at the Popular Tribunal held in Rondônia. Three months after the Popular Court, the Committee of Support for the Land Struggle (CALT) will organize a mobilization with artists and popular movements to demand the release of the lawyer.
