India – CASR: Commemorating the 5th Martyrdom Anniversary of Fr. Stan Swamy
We hereby share a call published by the Campaign Against State Repression (CASR) on its Facebook account on the 2nd of of July.
Public Meeting on:
“UAPA and NIA: Constitutional Concerns and the Suppression of Dissent”
Greetings from the Campaign Against State Repression (CASR).
We warmly invite all democratic-minded people, students, workers, lawyers, journalists, academics, human rights defenders, and concerned citizens to join this public meeting on the occasion of the 5th martyrdom anniversary of Fr. Stan Swamy.
Fr. Stan Swamy, an 84-year-old Jesuit priest and Adivasi rights defender, dedicated his life to the struggle for justice and the rights of marginalised communities. His imprisonment under the UAPA and prosecution by the NIA, despite his advanced age and failing health, ended in his death while awaiting bail on 5 July 2021, highlighting the devastating human cost of draconian laws.
The meeting will examine the constitutional concerns surrounding the UAPA and the expanding role of the NIA, and discuss how these laws have increasingly been used to suppress dissent, criminalise democratic movements, and undermine civil liberties.
