“Cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point conducted a series of training activities in early June at the Amazon Military Command (CMA) and the Jungle Warfare Training Center (CIGS) in Manaus”, A Nova Democracia (AND) reports, characterizing operations such as these as an increase in the integration of the Brazilian Armed Forces into the plans of Yankee imperialism.
During the stay of the Yankee cadets at CIGS they got to have direct contact with survival and combat techniques in jungle environments, as well as experiencing the operational capabilities of the Brazilian Army in remote areas. The High Command of the Armed Forces (ACFA) celebrates these exercises as “cooperation”, while what is truly being consolidated is the transfer of sensitive information about logistics and operational capabilities of law enforcement in the Amazonia. AND writes that “this activity reinforces the political and military alignment that subordinates National Defense to Washington’s directives.”
The Amazonia is a much coveted area for Yankee imperialism, as it seeks its abundant reserves of rare earth elements and critical minerals, essential for the technological- and, above all, military production. These operations, described in the Yankee imperialist agenda regarding the “Western Hemisphere”, come as preparation for the confrontation and neutralization of any popular resistance mounted against the exploitation of these resources. These operations functions in this way as a Yankee familiarization of foreseen future combat in the Amazon, under the guise of “security” and “combating drug trafficking.”
Using criminalization as a strategy of occupation, big landlords such as Ronaldo Caiado, member of the former paramilitary organization “Democratic” Ruralist Union (UDR), Caiado has through his speeches promised to “seek partnerships with Americans in satellites and imaging” and to use technology to combat organized crime, aligning with the plans of Yankee imperialism for greater militarization of the Amazonia. Caiado has additionally defended the use of repressive forces in frontal combat in the Amazonia, advocating for the classification of criminal organizations as “terrorist organizations”, aiming to legalize the permanent use of the Armed Forces in the region, and enable Yankee imperialism to enter through its “anti-terrorism”-legislation.
In conclusion AND writes that “Yankee imperialism has already carried out limited, yet sporadic and aggressive actions that combined economic harassment, diplomatic maneuvers, and comprehensive military pressure to dismantle popular organizations throughout Latin America. The presence of Yankee military personnel in Brazil, under the pretext of cooperation, is the first step towards establishing this doctrine, which aims at the systematic weakening and repression of any organization that defends the land and national sovereignty.”
