Mexico: Weekly Newsletter

We hereby share an unofficial translation of the part on Mexico from the latest Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo on the 14th of July.

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) has issued a statement in which it dismisses all reports pointing to the involvement of the Mexican army as the party responsible for the disappearance of the Ayotzinapa students, which occurred on the night of September 26th, 2014. The CNDH (which has now become the de facto defender of the Mexican army) has, with the stroke of a pen, dismissed the reports presented by organizations of the stature of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) and the Commission for Truth and Access to Justice (Covaj).

In doing so, the public agency has dismissed the work of the civil society and international organizations that acted independently—conducting investigations, providing expert analysis, adopting a differentiated approach, and supporting the victims, among other efforts. The CNDH’s intention is to whitewash the disgraceful Mexican army, exonerating it of its proven responsibility. In light of this situation, the parents of the 43, along with the Federation of Socialist Peasant Students of Mexico (FECSM), have stated that they will continue to organize demonstrations and protest actions to demand the release of official records, access to all information related to the investigation, the acceptance of the reports, and the punishment of those responsible. They have reiterated that the disappearance of the 43 remains a just struggle and a symbol of resistance in the face of the human rights crisis Mexico is undergoing—a crisis that is, in essence, reactionary war against the people, resulting in more than 133,000 people now missing throughout the country.

As the Front of the People – Red Sun, we also reject the CNDH’s recommendation and once again express our unwavering solidarity with the mothers and fathers of the 43, with the “Raúl Isidro Burgos” Rural Teachers’ College in Ayotzinapa, and with our comrades in the FECSM. It was the army—it was the State! Ayotzi lives on and on—the struggle continues and continues!
